    God & Sunburns

so i'll skip the boring stuff and get right down to it. basically, i went to the beach last weekend and got a sunburn. i came to the conclusion that a sunburn can correlate with our spiritual lives. this may not be ground-breaking or earth-shattering revelation. sure there are plenty of holes in this theology, so take it as you may, but somebody out there needs to hear this...if anything, this is a lesson for me.

for those out there who don't get much sun, here is the sunburn process:

    • you stay out in the sun all day and choose to be ignorant of the fact that the sun might affect your body in any way.
    • you get home to shower and clean up, only to realize that the redness has taken over your back and the burn has overcome you. the next few days are almost unbearable painful.
    • days later the pain mostly subsides and in turn becomes a constant discomfort of itching and peeling dry skin.
    • finally, the process is complete. all the dead skin is gone and a new layer has emerged, darker and more vibrant than the last. you look better and feel better.

how do we get the burn? we get too busy for God. we stop reading our Bible, we stop pressing in and get complacent with the way things are. we choose not to put our armor on daily. we let the things of this world drag us down/consume us. we believe the lies of the enemy. our character doesn't match up with that of God's. we get our priorities and responsibilities off balance.

what is the burn? it's the Holy Spirit nudging at you. it's conviction knocking at your door. it's realizing that you've been deceived. it's truth brought to you in a new light. it's the pain you feel when you know you've disappointed God. how long you feel the burn is entirely up to you. it won't let you be until you choose repentance.

what is the peel/itch? once you've committed to being refined or renewed God comes to strip you of yourself. this is the Potter shaping and molding the clay. he is transforming you with brokenness and humility.

what is the outcome? reconciliation with God. freedom from bondage. walking out and living in truth. you've been stripped bare before God; exposed. your pain was temporary, but your growth will be permanent.

*disclaimer: results may vary. wear sunscreen when out in the sun for long periods of time. not everyone will finish the process with darker skin, instead of being 3 shades darker, your freckle count may grow by 3 times.

    what is faith?

"We live by faith, not by sight." - 2 Corinthians 5:7

    faith is not seen

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." - Hebrews 11:1

are you certain of what you cannot see?

we should base our faith on God's power, not man's wisdom

"If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all." - Isaiah 7:9

If you can see clearly how something can be accomplished, more than likely faith is not required.

what you believe about God will determine what you do.

    just thinking out loud...
